Andrea: I created “Shadows” deliberately, already knowing at the beginning of the process what the name would be. This is unusual, as I normally allow the piece to speak for itself, but I had a vision of a completely monochromatic, gradational piece in black, white and shades of grey. I wanted something dark and mysterious with a touch of apprehension.
Arlene: I fell in love with “Shadows” as soon as I saw it The idea of a night sky and a moon came quickly and then it was just a matter of how big was the moon going to be and where should it sit on the canvas? Once I decided to paint the moon big and falling off the left side of the canvas I knew the composition needed more "punch". So I began removing paint from the moon and during that process the figure revealed itself to me. This piece went on to inform my process for the remaining paintings.
